SIMATIC Robot Simulator

The SIMATIC Robot Simulator is a Windows application that provides an SRCI-based universal virtual robot controller (VRC). With it, robot arms from different manufacturers that support SRCI can be simulated using the SIMATIC Robot Library.

Overview

To shorten lead times and increase production output, feasibility and failure analyses in a virtual environment are key. These can be performed before the robot is physically present.

But even for the simulation of basic applications you usually have to download and gain the know-how on each manufacturer’s simulation software before you can get to the actual testing.

Plus, you have to start anew for the next application that requires a different robot.

This is where the SIMATIC Robot Simulator comes in: It takes up the role as SRCI-based virtual robot controller (VRC) and allows you to use the SIMATIC Robot Library to simulate the behavior of the robot controller for many use cases.

Specification

SRCI (Standard Robot Command Interface)“ and interface concept

The basis for the SIMATIC Robot Simulator is the SIMATIC Robot Library, which is based on the “Standard Robot Command Interface” specification. This specification is offered as a new profile within the PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e.V. (PNO). SRCI defines the communication mechanism between the robot control and PLC. In addition, it standardises definitions and robot commands between different manufacturers.

The SIMATIC Robot Library provides the client with a command set library in SIMATIC S7-PLCSIM Advanced and communicates with the SIMATIC Robot Simulator as its simulated counterpart, acting as the “interpreter” (the server program of the robot controller). SIMATIC S7-PLCSIM Advanced (client) calls server functions by sending command telegrams and corresponding arguments to the SIMATIC Robot Simulator (server). The SIMATIC Robot Simulator executes the function and sends back command-specific response messages.

No adjustments to the PLC program are necessary for using the SIMATIC Robot Simulator, and it can be transferred to a real SIMATIC S7 without modification.

System requirements

  • The SIMATIC Robot Simulator can run on Windows 10 with the SIMATIC Robot Library with version V1.0.0.2 or higher and with SIMATIC S7-PLCSIM Advanced V6.0 or higher
  • Furthermore, the SIMATIC Robot Simulator requires per simultaneously running robot arm instance one core of an Intel Core I7™ – 6820EQ (or equivalent) as well as 6 GB RAM, 5 GB free disk space and a minimal screen resolution of 1024 x 1024

Scope of functions

The SIMATIC Robot Simulator supports the following robot control command sets of the SIMATIC Robot Library:

  • General commands
  • Movement commands
  • Read and write commands

It supports all functions that are declared as part of the “Core” profiles by the “Standard Robot Command Interface” specification. Single functions contained in the specification as “Optional functions” are also supported.

Further functions that are declared as part of the “Extended” profile and as “Optional” by the specification will be supported incrementally in upcoming versions of the SIMATIC Robot Simulator.
